This website does not advocate stopping the Herring River Restoration Project, which is underway and has widespread support.
The primary purpose of this website is to inform the stakeholders – largely the citizens of Wellfleet – about underappreciated facts to help them avoid unpleasant surprises as the Herring River Restoration Project progresses.
A secondary purpose is to provide interested parties with access to hard-to-find documents. I obtained many of the documents available here through FOIA requests from federal agencies and public records requests from state agencies and municipalities. The documents provide internal fact-checking for the website's informational pages.
For readers interested in what has led up to the Herring River project, historical information traces the evolution from conflicts over who should manage the Chequessett Road dike to concern over water quality. From there, the narrative turned to the belief by many people that, environmentally, a saltwater marsh would be superior to a freshwater marsh.
Hard-to-find documents include agreements, grants, permits and planning meeting agendas and minutes. Historical information includes timelines for the Herring River and the restoration project, as well as the minutes of an early (2006) planning meeting.
