The first unintended consequence negatively impacting the Herring River Restoration Project was averted less than a month after the project began. Michael Parlante, a Wellfleet shell fisherman, alerted authorities that a reef of wild oysters was in the construction path of the new Chequessett Neck Road bridge being built to control the restoration of tides in the river.
On April 8, members of the Wellfleet Shellfish Department and five AmeriCorps volunteers moved about 20,000 oysters out of harm's way. The event was reported in the Provincetown Independent and the Cape Cod Times.
